What is Casino Royale?
Casino Royale is a 2006 spy film and the first installment in the 21st Century James Bond film series, produced by Eon Productions. The film is based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, and stars Daniel Craig in his first portrayal of the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The film was directed by Martin Campbell and co-stars Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, and Giancarlo Giannini.
The plot of Casino Royale
The film begins with James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a mission in Madagascar to retrieve a Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), a terrorist financier. Bond captures Le Chiffre and takes him to London, where he is interrogated by M (Judi Dench). M tells Bond that Le Chiffre is planning to use his funds to bankrupt the British government by betting against them at a high-stakes poker tournament in Montenegro. Bond is sent to the tournament to stop Le Chiffre and recover the money.
At the tournament, Bond meets Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a Treasury agent who is working with MI6 to help Bond stop Le Chiffre. Bond and Vesper develop a romantic relationship, but Bond is unaware that she is actually a double agent working for Le Chiffre.
Le Chiffre loses the poker tournament and is forced to pay his debts to his clients. He kidnaps Vesper and tortures her in an attempt to get her to reveal Bond’s identity. Bond rescues Vesper and kills Le Chiffre. However, Vesper is mortally wounded and dies in Bond’s arms.
