Wonder Woman 1984 (stylized as WW84) is a 2020 American superhero movie based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. It is the sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman and the ninth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

The film is directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham, based on a story by Johns and Jenkins. Gal Gadot stars as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, alongside Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.

Set in 1984 during the Cold War, the film follows Diana and her past love Steve Trevor as they compete against Maxwell Lord and Cheetah.

About Wonder Woman 1984

Discussion of a sequel began shortly after the first film’s release in June 2017, and the decision to proceed was confirmed the following month. Principal photography began on June 13, 2018, with filming taking place at Warner Bros.

Studios, Leavesden in England, as well as the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia in the United States, London and Duxford in England, Tenerife and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, and Almería in Andalusia, Spain.

Production was completed on December 22, 2018, after a six-month shoot, with additional shootings in July 2019.

Wonder Woman 1984 premiered on December 15, 2020 via the DC FanDome virtual platform. It was released in theaters in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 25, 2020, and also made available to be digitally streamed on HBO Max for a month. In international markets that do not have HBO Max, the film was released in theaters on December 16, 2020.

The film received mixed reviews, with critics praising Gadot’s “ escapist qualities, ” and Jenkins’ direction, but others saying it was “ overly indulgent or cliché. ”

Wonder Woman 1984 Review: Sequel Floats On One Wing – The Returning Gal Gadot

The flight is easy, says Steve Trevor, the mischievous American pilot who is Diana Prince’s love interest. It’s “wind and air,” he adds. All you need to know is how to catch it, ride it and join it. But is that all it takes to fly high? Especially when the flight path is as challenging as that of Patty Jenkins’ mega hit Wonder Woman from 2017 for the sequels.

Wonder Woman 1984 only occasionally manages to be a smooth cruise. It floats on one wing – the returning Gal Gadot. As sturdy as that wing is – Gadot is undoubtedly in top form and she’s well supported by Kristen Wiig as the nerdy Barbara Minerva who gains Wonder Woman-esque power but loses her humanity – a two and a half hour movie needs a lot more.

WW84 (written by Jenkins with Geoff Johns and David Callahan) struggles to find real inspiration when Gadot doesn’t do her number – she dives into her red-and-blue Golden Eagle armor to save humanity, soars above the mundane around her superheroists or controlling criminals with her glowing lasso of truth.

The film offers old-fashioned escapist entertainment that is not exactly thrilling. It comes over because it’s the mix with the classic ingredients of a superhero movie – lots of drama, an emotional core, some humor and a whole lot of wish fulfillment that fetches a prize from the on-screen beneficiaries and the audience (from a willing suspension, by the way) of disbelief).

WW84 gets off to a decent start – it kicks off on the magical, utopian island of Themyscira in a flashback prelude that reveals an important rite of passage in Diana’s evolution before taking audiences into consumer-driven Washington DC of the mid-1980s – but it never scales the dizzy heights of the earlier film.

Despite several thrilling action scenes and dramatic licks, WW84 relies less on wind and sky than on a plain-looking antique stone with extraordinary qualities – a Macguffin propelling the showdown between Wonder Woman and her two main adversaries.

Like all superhero movies, WW84 is a simplistic, morally serious fairytale yarn. It depends on the powers of truth, love, justice and true heroism – represented by Wonder Woman (Gadot) and Steve (Chris Pine), who emerged from the Cold World era after he died heroically in World War I at the ending of Wonder Woman. – to include a villain whose only desire is to wield power around the world. There is no room here for irony or cynicism, the staples of contemporary superhero films, but there is plenty of social commentary.

The villain, Maxwell Lord, is a television personality who sells gossamer dreams (‘Life is good, but it could be better’, is his favorite punch line), a failed businessman and delusional who, when he gains the power he seeks, creates a complete hash of it. Does not Lord remind us of a man about to step down from office (in the same town where WW84 is set) as the world’s most powerful man? In fact, Maxwell Lord, whose ambition far exceeds his prowess, reminds us of many other such clueless megalomaniacs who mess up their nations.

Lord, played with fairly broad strokes by Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal (of The Mandalorian), doesn’t get the air of invincibility that could push Wonder Woman all the way up a wall and force her to tap into her unique powers. When something upsets Diana, it’s the emotional turmoil and moral dilemma that causes Steve’s return.

Wonder Woman is not at all vengeful in WW84. All she’s interested in is saving humanity from the chaos unleashed by Max Lord. Forgiveness is easy for her – she does not seek to kill, but to heal and even allow her enemies to repent. Not such a bad idea in the context of the kind of year 2020 has been for humanity – and for blockbuster cinema.

Gal Gadot is a charmer who can also act. She articulates pain, altruism and assertiveness in one movement without losing her balance. The handsome Chris Pine serves to brighten up the proceedings when the action slows down in the middle parts of the film, dedicated to the joy of a woman reunited with a lover she lost in World War I.

In the lively prologue, Young Diana (Lilly Aspell, who played the same role in Wonder Women at the age of 10) in Themyscira learns a lesson in straight and fair play in a multidisciplinary match against older Amazons. The moral tip she gets from her strict aunt mentor Antiope (Robin Wright) stays with her throughout the movie. “A true hero is never born from lies,” young Diana is told.

Then we catch Diana in the US capital overrun with flashy and fast cars, in your face clothes, tomahawk hairstyles and other ostentatious, era-defining gear. Diana, who works with antiquities at the Smithsonian Institute, does her best to stay out of the spotlight.

When not taking care of the precious artifacts of the Smithsonian, where she is a senior cultural archaeologist, she rescues pedestrians from speeding vehicles or stops shop robberies. But her rescue is done incognito. But that’s only until Max Lord comes to the surface and the Dreamstone comes under his control. The world must be saved again.

The foiled robbery – the target is a jewel story, which, it turns out, is a cover for an illegal trade in rare antiquities, is the trigger for the subsequent proceedings of the film. The Dreamstone, part of the mall’s haul, reaches the Smithsonian.

A new addition to Diana’s ward, Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), a nerdy, unconfident woman, idolizes her and wishes to be like her. Her wish comes true, thanks to the age-old citrine stone that she has to take care of. Her admiration turns to resentment, admiration to rivalry, and she herself mutates into the apex predator Cheetah.

In a year when moviegoers have been starved by big screen entertainment, Wonder Woman 1984, on Christmas Eve in Indian multiplexes, delivers scales of it. Not everything holds water, but why complain when Gal Gadot is taking her share of the deal with all the flair at her disposal? She is pushing WW84 above reasonable limits.
