Loosely based on the Koei and Omega Force game series of the same name, ‘Dynasty Warriors’ is a visually stunning historical action-adventure film with some supernatural flashy elements in the mix. Brought to the cinematic medium by director Roy Chow, the film sometimes seems outrageous, but that’s part of the fun. The story revolves around the final years of the Han Dynasty and revolves around the coup d’état of the ambitious and far-reaching General Gong Zhuo on the royal throne. As the kingdom is torn apart by greed, fornication and betrayal, powerful heroes from across the land come together to form a coalition against the self-elected chancellor. By the time the story ends, the landscape is marred by dead soldiers in the aftermath of a devastating war. As the story grinds to a halt in an open ending, the audience must be on the lookout for an impending sequel. If you’re researching the prospects of a sequel, let us help you on your journey.
Dynasty Warriors 2 release date
‘Dynasty Warriors’ premiered in China and Hong Kong on April 29, 2021, after a long delay due to the pandemic. On July 1, 2021, the film made its way to the popular streaming platform Netflix and was released in countries such as Germany, India, Poland and Singapore.
Now let’s add up the prospects for a sequel. While neither director Roy Chow nor the producers have released any information about a sequel, the prospects look bright indeed. The movie is a live-action adaptation of a widely popular game franchise, and since there are 9 episodes in the game series, there should be at least a few sequels. Plus, action-adventure movies are typically known for being slow-paced, so a sequel seems likely.
However, there is a small problem. With a production budget of $300 million Hong Kong dollars, the film spends quite a bit to make the grand cinematic vision a reality. However, after its release, the film was apathetic received by the critics and polarized fans of the game franchise. While some fans accepted the film in all its visual glory, some were outraged by the over-the-top action sequences.
As a direct result, the film has only managed to fetch less than a twelfth of its generous spend. While the meager global box office collection may discourage producers from continuing with the franchise, there’s still a small option for the sequel to become a reality. Going down the story itself, the ending sees Dong Zhuo fleeing his palace, leaving the Imperial Jade Seal for Sun Jian. As Sun takes power, the Blood Brothers train the rebels for another attack. So the war is far from over.
However, the original film entered pre-production in 2016 and was four years in the making. Post-production took over a year to complete, which is clear when you consider the heavy CGI use in the film. So even if the sequel idea is realized, we will have to wait a little longer before we can visit the cinema. If the sequel gets the green light at the end of 2021, we expect the sequel to ‘Dynasty Warriors’ to come out sometime in 2024 or later.
Dynasty Warriors 2 Cast: Who Could Be In It?
All central cast members will most likely reprise their roles. However, the film was heavily criticized for its casting and the producers may consider recruiting new actors. If the former, we’re expecting Louis Koo (Lu Bu), Kai Wang (Cao Cao), Tony Yo-Ning Yang (Liu Bei), Geng Han (Guan Yu), Justin Cheung (Zhang Fei), and Coulee Nazha ( Diao Chan) plays a central role in the sequel. None of the main characters is dead and in all likelihood they will all continue their storylines in the sequel. We can also expect some new faces, which would be revealed once production starts.
Dynasty Warriors 2 Plot: What Could It Be About?
At the end of the first film, the battle between the royal army and the rebels comes to a standstill, with all the warlords vying for power. In the finale of events, it is Sun Jian who ascends the throne, while Cao Cao and the three sworn brothers are left to muster another army to fight Sun Jian. In another related development, Dong Zhuo flees the city of Luoyang, but he is far from dead. Diao Chan accepts to marry Dong Zhuo while plotting to kill him.
The sequel may well emerge from the open finale of the first film. While we don’t know anything about the development of the script, things are definitely expected. The film is heavily based on history, and if we turn the pages of history, we’ll see Lu Bu finally atone for his previous betrayal by killing Dong Zhuo. On the other hand, even if it seems like Cao Cao only wants to protect the Han prince, he clearly has some royal aspirations. We also know that Cao Cao becomes a great chancellor of the Eastern Han Dynasty in his later years, although looking at the film, he is far from achieving the title. In all likelihood, future episodes will detail the history of the “Three Kingdoms” period.
