It’s time to get back to East High folks. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series or HSMTMTS if you are too lazy to type it out like us), dropped a trailer for season 2 on Thursday, and the drama is heating up.

If you need an HSMTMTS recap: After breaking up over the summer, Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) and Ricky (Joshua Bassett) are back together. But Nini swaps schools to attend a fancy performing arts program. Meanwhile, Gina and Ashlyn devise a plan so that Gina can stay in East High. Carlos and Seb also remain the pair to row for during the series.

But eagle-eyed fans have linked a new season 2 character to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit “Driver’s License.” Many now wonder if the Rodrigo & Bassett outdoor drama contributed to Season 2 of HSMTMTS.

'HSMTMTS' is quickly becoming a hit series on Disney +, with Season 2 coming next month. But fans think "Drivers license" inspired part of season 2.

Break the song well

Everyone and their mother currently know “Driver’s License”. Olivia Rodrigo’s debut single quickly rose to the top of the charts and established her place among the 2021 pop titans. It didn’t hurt. Tiktok also helped launch the song to heaven.

As popular as the song was the rumors surrounding it, as many believed that Olivia Rodrigo wrote the song about her split from HSMTMTS costar Joshua Bassett. The two never made their relationship official, but fans soon noticed the two were spending more time together outside of the set. Then the couple broke up and Joshua ended up with another Disney star Sabrina Carpenter.

If you want to believe the rumors, Rodrigo wrote “Driver’s License” about Bassett breaking up and possibly cheating on her with Carpenter. Both Bassett and Carpenter have released songs that resemble reactions to “Driver’s License,” although both deny that the songs were written about Rodrigo’s hit.

“And you’re probably with that blonde girl”

So what does all this drama have to do with HSMTMTS season 2? In the new trailer, it’s clear that Nini and Ricky are trying to make their long-distance relationship work, but there are issues. More importantly, there is a problem with the name Lily (Olivia Rose Keegan).

While we don’t know if she’s a North High foe or a transfer to East High, we do know that she’s starting to get flirty with Ricky in Nini’s absence. In the trailer, we can see that the drama of being separated affects Ricky and Nini’s relationship, and immediately we move on to Lily being flirty with Ricky at some event.

In case it wasn’t clear by the subhead, Olivia Rose Keegan is blonde and gets to keep her blonde hair in her role in HSMTMTS season 2. One of the most popular lyrics from ‘Driver’s License’ is’ And you’re probably with that blonde girl , which I always doubted / She’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about ”.

Deliberate pouring?

As much as we hope Disney is just shady AF with these casting decisions, the timelines just don’t match. Although COVID-19 delayed the filming of HSMTMTS Season 2, filming was completed in late 2020. ‘Driver’s license’ did not fall until the second week of 2021.

And as much as we love celebrity drama, so are Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo literally teenagers. Of course, their breakup will be dramatic, just like any other teenage couple on Earth. In any case, their breakup imitated the relationship of their characters in the first season.

Even if “Driver’s License” didn’t inspire HSMTMTS Season 2, we’re excited to see what comes next for our East High favorites. Season 2 premieres on Disney + on May 14, with weekly episodes on Fridays.
