A new year, a new superhero series. While stories of Superman, Spider Man, and Batman are nothing new, the huge success of franchises such as The Dark Knight & Marvel Cinematic Universe let every production company, streaming service and filmmaker scramble for their version. Unfortunately, this makes many of them seem like a dime in a dozen. In May 2021, Netflix gave us the latest in Jupiter’s Legacy.
Like it The Umbrella Academy & the boys for the, The Legacy of Jupiter rock the superhero trope by using characters/storylines that are unknown or relatively original to the genre. While fans clamor to see what happens after Season 1’s cliffhanger ending, little has been released about a planned Season 2. Here’s what we know so far.
The Legacy of Jupiter
The Legacy of Jupiter premiered on Netflix on May 7, 2021. Based on the comic series Image The Legacy of Jupiter by Mark Millar & Frank Quitely, it was developed for television by Steven S. DeKnight, who was initially the showrunner. Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade and Matt Lanter star.
Shortly after Sheldon Sampson’s father’s suicide in 1929, caused by Black Thursday, former businessman Sheldon travels to an unknown island in the Atlantic Ocean, where he, his brother, Walter, and four others gained superpowers.
He then creates a superhero team called the Union of Justice. His guiding ideals of never killing anyone or meddling in political affairs remain unchanged throughout the nearly century of his adventures as the utopian.
However, the next generation of superheroes, including his children, struggles to live up to his rigid ideals and high hopes. When Sheldon’s son, Brandon, seemingly kills one of their greatest enemies, a public debate ignites about whether those ideals are still relevant.
Reception and season 2
Rotten Tomatoes rated 52 reviews and found that 38% were positive, with an average rating of 5.3/10. The critic’s consensus reads: “Despite some truly epic battles, The Legacy of Jupiter is just too crowded and slow to make a lot of narrative punches. According to Metacritic, the series received “mixed or average reviews,” based on a weighted average score of 45 out of 100 from 15 critics.
Audiences still seemed to love the series as it was the most-watched show on a streaming service during its May 3rd through May 9th release week. It took 696 million minutes of watch time, beating second place The Handmaid’s Tale with a whole six million minutes. However, like many other Netflix productions, it suffered a sharp drop in viewership after its release, dropping sixty percent on May 17.
Due to the critic’s decline and negative reviews, The Legacy of Jupiter was canceled before season 2 could get off the ground. While the streaming service has done follow-up seasons with less love for critics, its $200 million budget (the largest of any Netflix production at the time) made it too big a gamble to redo.
A glimmer of hope
In 2017, Netflix decided to forgo the usual process of buying rights to a comic book and just bought an entire company with Millar’s Millarworld. Included in the portfolio are: Super awesome, Kingsman, and Sought. After the release of Season 1, and before the Season 2 announcement was shelved, creator and writer Mark Millar was asked for his thoughts on what’s next. Here’s what he had to say.
“I am really proud of what the team has achieved with The Legacy of Jupiter and the great work everyone has done in that origin season. I’ve been asked a lot about what we’re up to with this world now, and the answer is to see what the super villains are up to. I’ve always loved crime stories, from Scorcese to Tarantino, and super villains are always the most fun part of any superhero story.”
Millar has written some of the most pivotal comic book stories of our time, including: Civil war & Wolverine: Old Man Logan, inspiration for the Captain America: Civil War & Logan movies or He also wrote the ultimate, credited by screenwriter Zak Penn as his inspiration for 2012 The Avengers. Add that to his hugely successful Kingsman: The Secret Service, and you understand that his works are conveyed well on the screen.
With his highly marketable skills and the comment above, it was only a matter of time before fans started speculating and Netflix took the idea of a super villains spin off. super villains takes place in the same world as The Legacy of Jupiter but focuses on the other side of the law. With possible crossovers from the original characters as the series’ nemesis, it could serve as a de facto season 2.
