History of Wheeling Island Casino
Wheeling Island Casino was the first casino to open in West Virginia. It was built on the site of the former Wheeling Island Race Track, which closed in 1996. The casino was approved by voters in a referendum in 1996. Construction on the casino began in 1997 and it opened in 1998.
The casino was originally owned by a partnership of Wheeling Island Development, Inc. and Harrah’s Entertainment. In 2005, Harrah’s Entertainment bought out Wheeling Island Development’s interest in the casino. In 2017, Eldorado Resorts acquired Harrah’s Entertainment.
