Directed by Doug Campbell, Lifetime’s “Pom Poms and Payback” is a thriller film that focuses on high school cheerleaders and their hideous desire for revenge. The group of friends who have been eagerly awaiting Prom night are shocked when their pals betray them on what should have been one of the best days of their lives. Hurt by their inconsiderate performance, the cheerleaders got together to give the boys a taste of their own medicine.

However, they soon find out that the real culprit behind their accident is Evergreen, their coach. As the story unfolds, the twists and turns in the film continue to baffle viewers who may begin to wonder about its origins, while some people may want to learn more about the cast or movie details. If you’re looking for similar information, we’ve got you covered.

Pom Poms and Payback Movie Locations

The Lifetime movie was shot extensively in California. Production at the Bear Flag State reportedly began in mid-September 2020 and ended a few days later, on October 1 of the same year. Wanting to learn more about the shooting of the film, we decided to dig deeper. Here’s everything we could discover!

Los Angeles, California

The main photography of the Doug Campbell direction took place in Los Angeles. The cast and crew filmed the school scenes at Bishop Mora Salesian High School at 960 South Soto Street. The all-male Roman Catholic high school was founded in 1958 and is named after Francisco Mora y Borrell, the Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles who served from 1878 to 1896. Production also took place in Northridge, the San Fernando Valley neighborhood in the City of Angels.

Other Locations in California

The shooting was also done in Indian Springs, California. The people on set followed strict COVID-19 protocols since production took place during the global coronavirus pandemic. The actors and crew tried to keep a safe distance and wore masks/face shields where possible.

Pom Poms and Payback Cast

Is Pom Poms and Payback a True Story?

No, ‘Pom Poms and Payback’ is not based on a true story. The teen drama that unfolds during the Prom night is not uncommon, and it has probably happened on other occasions in real life as well. However, the coach plotting something sinister is definitely overly dramatic, and viewers must have rightly guessed that there is little truth to the whole story.

Credit for the suspenseful plot goes entirely to Richard Clark and Doug Campbell, the talented screenwriters, who have used a somewhat similar and recurring Lifetime movie plotline and made the story interesting by putting their own spin on it. Over the years, Lifetime has been behind the production of countless cheerleading films. The long list includes “The Secret Lives of Cheerleaders,” “Dying to Be a Cheerleader,” “The Cheerleader Murders,” “The Wrong Cheerleader,” “The Wrong Cheerleader Coach,” and many others.

While most of the films mentioned above have a unique plot, ‘The Wrong Cheerleader Coach’ bears striking resemblance to Doug Campbell’s directing. Like the latter, it revolves around the questionable motives of Devan, the cheerleading coach, who will go to any lengths to get what she wants. Like Evergreen, Devan also transcends the boundaries of professionalism and tries to meddle in the private lives of her students.

The above factors further prove that the screenplay by Richard Clark and Doug Campbell is just a further exploration of recurring storylines that have already been used in various Lifetime movies on numerous occasions. With no claims to be inspired by real-life incidents, it’s safe to assume “Pom Poms and Payback” isn’t a true story.
