If you want something truly patriotic, but also fun, Peter H. Hunt’s Musical 1776 is the place for you. A musical retelling of the American Revolution’s political struggle in the Continental Congress to declare independence. The film stars William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Donald Madden, John Cullum, Ken Howard and Blythe Danner.

Jaws (1975)

Jaws is a near-perfect summer movie. Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller – between scary shark attacks, that is. The fir tree perfectly captures the feeling of summer vacation at the beach, with a strong connection to Independence Day. So if you’re into pure fun on the sweet summer slopes, Jaws is the place for you. When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it’s up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist and an old navigator to track down the beast.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

A political comedy-drama film directed by Frank Capra, starring Jean Arthur and James Stewart, and starring Claude Rains and Edward Arnold. The film is about a newly appointed United States senator who fights against a corrupt political system. A naive man is appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate. His plans promptly clash with political corruption, but he doesn’t back down.

John Adams (2008)

If you really want to enjoy a day indoors on July 4th, why not try HBO’s John Adams miniseries? The John Adams biopic and the story of the first 50 years of the United States was broadcast in seven parts by HBO between March 16 and April 20, 2008. Paul Giamatti portrays John Adams.
