Rules for Home Run Derby

timing

  • The regulation period of rounds 1 & 2 is 3:00 minutes per batter.
  • The final round regulation period is 2:00 minutes per batter

  • The timer starts by releasing the first pitch and a round ends when the timer hits zero. A home run counts provided the pitch was released before the timer hits zero.
  • Each batter may call one 45-second time-out in the regulation period of each round (including the last round). No time-outs are allowed during the bonus period.

Bonus time

  • All batters get 30 seconds of bonus time after the regulation period of each round.
  • A batter receives an additional 30 seconds of bonus time if he hits at least one home run equal to or greater than 475 feet in the regulation period of that round. When this happens, the bonus time for the round is 60 seconds.
  • The bonus period – be it 30 seconds or 60 seconds – is a single time segment, with no timeouts.
  • After the regulation period, a batter is allowed a break of up to one minute before his bonus period begins.
  • During the bonus period, a special T-Mobile magenta ball is used.

Scoring/Progress

  • The batter with the most home runs in each matchup advances to the next round.
  • A tie in any round is broken by a 60-second goodbye with no time interruption or extra time added; if there is a tie after the swing-off, the batters will continue with consecutive three swing-offs until there is a winner.
  • If the second batter hits more than the first batter in a matchup, he is declared the winner and may not attempt to hit additional home runs. If this happens during the regulation period, the batter does not need the bonus period.
