World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year. It is the United Nations’ flagship day to promote environmental awareness and action worldwide. Over the years, it has grown to become the largest global environmental audience outreach platform and is celebrated by millions of people around the world. This year the day is organized by our neighboring country Pakistan in collaboration with the UN Environment Program (UNEP) with the theme ‘ecosystem recovery’. With the Covid19 pandemic, the climate is increasingly suffering from the increased use of plastic and non-biodegradable things, including PPE kits, masks and other things. This year focuses on the urgency of preventing, halting and reversing the degradation of ecosystems worldwide.
UNEP Director Inger Andersen said: “2020 has been a year of reckoning, with multiple crises, including a global pandemic and the ongoing crises of climate, wildlife and pollution. In 2024 we need to take deliberate steps to move from crisis to healing: and in doing so, we must recognize that the restoration of nature is absolutely necessary for the survival of our planet and humanity.”
World Environment Day 2024: theme
The theme of the 47th World Environment Day is ‘Ecosystem recovery’. This year the focus is on restoring the relationship with nature. World Environment Day on June 5 also marks the formal launch of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration 2024-2030. The UN Decade aims to massively scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems to combat the climate crisis, prevent the loss of a million species and improve food security, water supply and livelihoods.
Reviving natural carbon sinks, such as forests and peatlands, could close the climate emissions gap by 25 percent by 2030.
