The Old Ways, New Netflix Horror Movie Scores 100% Rotten Tomatoes

One of the entertainment trends during the COVID-19 era that somewhat confused me is the popularity of horror movies and shows on Netflix. You would think that people want to escape from everything that reminds them of gloom and despair. You know, since we’re still in the midst of a once-in-a-century health crisis that, according to official figures, has killed more than 4.4 million people in a relatively short period of time. But the hits of the horror genre keep coming for Netflix subscribers. The fear street trilogy. A classic horror story. Blood red sky. And now we can add The old ways to that list.

The old ways — now streaming on Netflix

As I type these words, The old ways is the number 6 title on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list. This movie has just been added to Netflix after its October 2020 premiere at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain. Brief: The main character (played by Brigette Kali Canales) is a Mexican-American journalist named Cristina Lopez. She visits her hometown in Mexico to cover a story about witchcraft. Unfortunately, a local gang kidnaps her. And from there it gets a lot worse for her.

You can watch the trailer online. Meanwhile, here’s another interesting fact about the movie. It has been so well received that (at least at the time of writing) it has a perfect score on Rotten tomatoes. Specifically a score from 100% critics, based on 16 reviews.

The old ways has bad practical effects and uses body horror as a way to represent Cristina’s inner demons and her refusal to deal with them,” writes one reviewer Dread Central. Brigitte Kali Canales gives a phenomenal performance as the tortured Cristina. Look it up when it becomes available.

Oh the horror

In the meantime, check out our guide to the best horror movies on Netflix right now for when you’re done watching The old ways. As part of one of our most recent coverage, we’ve also previously written about Kingdom: Ashin of the North — one of the most talked-about recent horror additions to the streamer.

It’s basically a spin-off feature-length special that ties into the Kingdom series on Netflix. From the streamer’s official description: “Ashin and her father are part of a strange tribe that has settled in the kingdom of Joseon. Their encounter with a mysterious illness sets Ashin on a path of betrayal, prejudice and revenge.”
