Tragedy struck New Amsterdam during Tuesday’s episode — but it remained largely off-screen.
Halfway through an argument with Max, Helen got a call and from her stunned response to the person on the other end of the line, it was clear that something very bad had happened. Towards the end of the hour, Ella appeared at Iggy’s office in tears. “It’s Vijay. He…” she announced, and her distraught voice died away.
“No, no, no,” Iggy exclaimed and hugged her. Not long after, Max and Helen showed up at the hospital, where they were reunited with their heartbroken colleagues. When Ella pointed out that they didn’t have to come, Max insisted they did. “We’re family,” Helen added.
Last April, it was revealed that Anupam Kher, who is Dr. Vijay Kapoor would not return to the series due to personal reasons. At the time of his departure, the actor’s wife, actress Kirron Kher, was undergoing treatment for blood cancer, The Hindustan Times reported.
Vijay last appeared at the beginning of Season 3, when the show used footage from the unaired Season 2 flu pandemic episode, in which Dr. Kapoor got the flu. In his last episode, Vijay survived his battle with COVID-19, but Iggy later learned that open heart surgery and then a difficult rehabilitation process had not allowed him to resume his job as chief of neurology.
“The past year has been difficult for so many people around the world, not least for Dr Kapoor,” Kher said in a statement after his departure. “It was an incredibly special time for me to be a part of this show and one that I will never forget. The New Amsterdam family will always have a special place in my heart. I am grateful to the public for their love, support and well wishes, especially to my wife, Kirron, at this time. I hope you all will continue to join me on my journey and future projects.”
