Eternals producer Nate Moore reveals how Mahershala Ali’s cameo as Blade came about and how it relates to Black Knight’s Ebony Blade.
One of the biggest surprises in Eternals was how small the role of Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman was in the film. The writers have since addressed this, but it was probably created by the order of the film’s credits. In it, Dane Whitman opens a briefcase containing a sword with his family’s coat of arms on it.
He eventually moves to touch the sword as a black live tar appears to move around it and says, “I’m sorry, I have to try.” An off-screen voice, which was eventually revealed as Mahershala Ali’s Blade, then says, “Are you ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” While nothing has been confirmed, this cameo seemed to indicate that there could be a crossover between Kit Harrington’s Black Knight and Mahershala Ali’s Blade somewhere on the horizon.
While speaking to ComicBook.com via Phase Zero podcast, Eternals producer Nate Moore spoke at length about Blade’s appearance in the film, how it came about and the thought process behind it:
“[Blade] used to be [part of the scene] for reasons that hopefully will become clear as you see more things, but [Mahershal Ali] wasn’t there that day. And we talked about two versions of that, one where we would cut it and one where we wouldn’t. “How lyrically do you want it?” And again, it was more for fun, to tease it a bit, to hear the voice and not see the man. He was a game to do it. Being the Ebony Blade, the features of the Ebony Blade don’t compare to vampirism to some degree and we think this is an interesting kind of thing to play around with. So we kind of knew that was on the table.”
Here’s the synopsis for it Eternals:
The story takes place in two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close-knit family unit. The second storyline takes place in the present, when the group has fallen and split apart, content to live among humans and hide in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the very survival of humanity, means that the Eternals must put aside their differences and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. The Marvel Studios project’s cast includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
