The new Netflix Original Oxygen is no wonder which is a rather futuristic take on the situation our world is currently facing. The title says it right, but there is some deep exploration to the plot of this movie. Even in one location throughout the movie. The movie is enough to make us spooky with the main character Elizabeth Hanson’s thought process. Directed by Alexandre Aja and written by Christie LeBlanc, starring Mélanie Laurent, Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi. It follows a woman who wakes up with no identity or history of herself in a cryo pod. Only with an AI by her side does she try to free herself from death with only a little oxygen left.
Oxygen during its run went through a number of revelations and complex plots. Some of these can confuse you and ask questions, just like with Liz’s character. So here we are, looking at some of the questions that may need to be answered. Exactly where the movie takes place, what happened to Earth, the government’s plans, who Liz is exactly, the clone theory and what it means for the future of humanity. Does everyone survive or not? So let’s start by looking at the plot of oxygen.
Oxygen plot summary
Oxygen follows the story of a woman trapped in a cryogenic chamber with no memories of who she is and what she’s doing here. Until an AI named Milo appears to be helping her with her identity as Dr. Elizabeth Hansen. But does not give her full control due to the lack of Admin codes required to operate the system. The movie sees her struggling to find out her history to get out of the pod.
Elizabeth uses articles and reference material available through the AI. Aside from that, she also has constant flashbacks from her past life that are of little help to her. But also leave her in more questions. There comes a point when she even manages to make contact with the outside world. From police officers to a woman who really wants to help her, but is only struck by a dark truth about her existence. The police tell Elizabeth that her husband does not exist despite having memories of him. While an elderly woman reveals to Liz that she is not in a hospital or even on Earth. There are twists and turns and also the reality and lies behind them that Elizabeth has to sort out before her oxygen runs out.
Oxygen end declared
So the first people Liz went to try his husband Leo and called the police, as we said above. But the police try to prevent Liz from knowing the truth. They hope that her oxygen is passing out and that she does not reveal the truth to the greater world. She can clearly hear them talking about telling her she’s imagining things. An elderly woman on the line told Liz about the mess. She ran into her while trying to contact her husband Leo, whom she has flashbacks to, along with an experiment on rats they were conducting.
The same woman also tells her that she is actually in space. Plus, she’s not alone, as there are 10,000 other damaged pods with humans in them. The reason she woke up amid this is that the space shuttle crashed with a meteor. While some of the 10,000 other people floated in space, while some survived. Returning to the call, the woman also gave Liz much-needed administrative codes. But she also warns her not to open the pod as this could lead to her immediate death.
What Happened to Earth?
Sometime later, the older woman calls back and remembers what happened. So according to her, the Earth is suffering from a virus that killed a million. Even Liz’s husband Leo died of the same. So the prediction is that the human race could die from the virus in the next two generations. To prevent the end of civilization, she devised a plan to colonize a planet orbiting “Wolf 10-61”. A planet 14 light-years from Earth.
Who is Liz?
So now that she comes back to Liz, she’s been asleep for 12 years now, and her oxygen is constantly dropping, and in order to avoid her death, she needs to fix the capsule. As soon as the woman is about to accompany her, people invade the woman’s house to take her out. She tells Liz to remember Leo in order to survive. With lost hope, Liz decides to end her life by jumping off the pod until a flash of Leo enters the same pod.
With help from Milo, Liz eventually discovers her husband in a similar pod, but with a scar missing. This leads her back to Elizabeth Hansen’s files. There she witnesses videos of Liz and her husband of cloning experiments performed by mouse bodies. Ultimately it works. So yes, the bodies being transported to space are actually clones. Including Liz herself, Milo reveals that her body shape is only 12 years old.
No wonder the government kept the fact away. Plus, it also reveals that the woman she spoke to could be none other than the real Liz. After all, she’s the one who designed this whole program. Either way, secrets are meant to be secrets.
So, now with a little explanation, Liz continues to retract power and go back to hypersleep. Milo helps Liz further by transporting the oxygen from destroyed pods to her. The final moments see Liz and Leo embracing life in each other’s arms as they gaze at the sea. We can finally say that after all the mess and struggles she’s been through, Liz managed to stay alive throughout the journey. This is how you reach Wolf 10-61c where humanity builds a completely new life. Despite being a clone, Liz is after all alive and starting over. She happily completed her mission on Earth. Humanity can now live on.
