Stewart is now in the final year of his Sunderland contract and it is said with which he probably will not sign a new contract reports suggest that the Saints could return with an £8 million bid after seeing an initial £5 million bid beaten back.
But with the latest news on the Stewart saga, Sunderland Echo reporter Phil Smith has revealed that no deal has been finalized yet, but it looks like Sunderland could eventually accept the offer Southampton is expected to make.
Smith tweeted:
Southampton are increasing their interest in Ross Stewart with a few days to go – Russell Martin is a big admirer.
Nothing has been done yet, but it seems they are willing to make a deal for that #SAFC would sanction. Definitely one to watch.

It is also claimed elsewhere, Sunderland say they will not approve Stewart’s departure until they can bring in a replacement, although a replacement striker doesn’t seem that close to signing at the moment.
Stewart to Southampton
Sunderland’s striker story rumbles on. It looks like the Black Cats are going to shoot themselves in the foot here, but there seem to be few other options.
Stewart seems unlikely to sign a new deal and it seems unlikely that Sunderland will keep him around and let him go for nothing next summer, so he will sell him for up to £8 million. now financially secure.
Boss Tony Mowbray certainly won’t want to see Stewart leave; especially as Sunderland have so far proved mediocre in their attempts to find new attackers this summer, and even this year.
It’s been a nervous 48 hours for Sunderland, who must strengthen a number of key positions before 11pm on Friday – without signing a new striker And If they sell Stewart, they could be in real trouble.
