There comes a time in many women’s lives when no matter how dreamy the hair, how chiseled the abs or how charmingly unconscious a guy seems to be, if he’s keeping you a secret, he definitely doesn’t deserve you.

Devi Vishwakumar comes to that realization in episode 9 of Never have I eversecond season, where she tells Paxton Hall-Yoshida that if he doesn’t want to be her boyfriend in public, he can no longer have sex with her in private.

When TVLine spoke to series star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, we wondered if Devi would have had the resources to pack the popular swim team stallion. “Absolutely not!” she said. “I really like that scene because for me it’s the first time Devi stands up for herself and really stands her ground.”

Devi’s statement naturally leads to more grief. Paxton says his hesitation stems from the fact that he didn’t want to look like a fool by openly dating the girl who twice timed him with Ben, then hit him with a car and ended his swimming career. And Devi understands, but repeats that he should also stop sneaking into her bedroom after dark. (Read a full recap of the finale.)

“There are often times when Devi can be too nervous to say what she’s thinking, although she’s a very confident girl in other ways,” Ramakrishnan added. “But this is the first time we’ve seen her stand her ground and say, ‘Okay, you know what? This isn’t going to work. I’m sorry.’” She laughs. “Like [series narrator] John McEnroe says, ‘I’m proud of the boy!’”

If you’ve seen the final episode of Season 2, you know that Paxton eventually changes his mind and shows up at the winter formal where he makes it clear to the whole school that Devi is his girlfriend. For the record, Ramakrishnan says, she had no idea how Devi’s romantic jokes would turn out (“We only know a little in advance”) — but what she likes most about the finale’s big dance scene has nothing to do with Ben and/or Paxton and anything related to Devi’s friendship with Fabiola and Eleanor.

“I like that the most when the three girls are together, because they just enjoy each other’s company,” she said.
