Jiivi Movie Synopsis: Frustrated by his failed romance, a smart man decides to steal from his landlady’s house. Even as he devises intelligent methods to outsmart the police, he realizes that his actions are echoes of the previous one.

Jiivi Movie Review: Saravanan (Vettri, whose efficiency is significantly better here than in his debut, 8 Thotakkal, but still has room for enchantment), Jiivi’s protagonist is undoubtedly one of the many notable protagonists we’ve now seen in Tamil cinema in the last years. He is someone who has left faculty because he believes sensible training is data. He is also curious. He’s shaped like a man who reads a number of books and prefers to watch an infotainment channel, even while his roommate Mani (Karunakaran, efficient) has late-night time to watch exhibits where doctors give advice on intercourse. He is someone who is not afraid of excessive morality. When they decide to steal from their landlady, a girl with an invalid husband and a visually impaired daughter, Mani asks him if he is not nervous that God is observing their actions, he replies, “Naama kashtapadumpodhu paathuttu dhaana irundhaaru?” He doesn’t even shy away when the neighbor they made the fall man for his or her crime approaches them as friends. It’s no surprise that we see them watch Mankatha, another movie with a hero who did irrevocable problems without apologies. This scene even has a line – Enakku naan dhaan hero – that explains Saravanan’s character and also serves as a meta-second for the film’s protagonist.

The special thing about Jiivi is that it does not worship or demonize Saravanan. As if it were a hero, the film takes an emotionless look at its actions. Both director VJ Gopinath and author Babu Tamizh are extra involved in showing the intelligence of this character and the distinctive place in which he finds himself in the second half of the film. They try to clarify the idea – synchronicity – without complicating the viewer, using Mani’s character to really make the exhibition feel like a dialogue. They also pressure delicate methods – a quick-tempered police officer, a ceiling fan that could fall off at any moment – and hold us.
Also technically, the film is as slick as its writing, making it one of the many memorable thrillers of the year.
