Over the decades, Bollywood has seen many phases. From larger-than-life historical stories, biopics of famous and unsung heroes, to movie remakes and the stereotypical story styles, movie buffs have seen it all. The emergence of OTT platforms has given many filmmakers the opportunity to experiment with stories and characters, which could be a drag on the big screen.
As actress Sai Tamhankar, who is gearing up for the release of yet another Bollywood film Mimi, reveals that it feels great to work with filmmakers who want to look beyond the horizons of stereotypes. She says: “It’s great to see Bollywood filmmakers not limiting themselves to stereotypical storylines and characters. We, as an audience, have seen the same storylines over and over again, which gets pretty boring. Because the current generation is so quick to expose the hypocrisy and share their feedback about a film, filmmakers want to look beyond the horizon of stereotypes. Even actors want to tell stories of people who have been oppressed by society.”
Sai plays an indispensable role in Mimi. About what the film entails, Sai says: “Working with Mimi’s entire team was a great experience. Laxman Sir really knows how to appease an audience with quirky, recognizable characters and heartbreaking storylines. While everyone knows that motherhood is a blessing, people are not aware of the forms of pregnancy. We need to educate people how becoming a mother should never be tied to whether women are married or not. I like the way my character was formed throughout the film. I hope in the future I can be a part of more such stories that are both informative and entertaining.”
This is not the first time that Sai has graced us with such a beautiful character. She previously worked in Bollywood films like Hunterrr, Love Sonia, Ghajini, Solo and Black&White.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Original and directed by Laxman Utekar, Mimi follows the journey of a surrogate mother. Starring Kriti Sanon, Sai Tamhankar, Pankaj Tripathi, Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak in pivotal roles, the film will be available on Netflix and Jio Cinema from July 30, 2021.
