It’s been three years American crime story a new episode aired, and to say we’re craving more would be an understatement. The hit FX show took us by surprise in 2016, when it unleashed an engaging retelling of the OJ Simpson saga during its premiere season. Then, in 2018, American crime story season 2 tackled another outrageous true crime story – the murder of Gianni Versace – and it hit us all the way again.
Producer Ryan Murphy is no stranger to the anthology genre, after gazillion seasons of American horror story under his belt. He cracked the code again with American crime story, mesmerizing the public with outrageous true crime sagas that made headlines in their day. That’s why we’re currently drooling over the upcoming third season, which aims to focus on the Bill Clinton / Monica Lewinsky debacle.
So no death on the map for next season – unless you count America’s innocence, SING – but it will probably be just as fascinating as the previous two. Fortunately, if you didn’t jump on board American crime story still working out, that’s nothing a solid binge session or two can’t do. And if you’re still unsure about putting the time in, maybe a more detailed look at the show can help you commit. Let’s do it!
The problem with OJ
Do you know what’s crazy? We had two hugely successful OJ Simpson projects that came out in 2016. One of these was the Oscar-winning documentary OJ: Made in America, which gave us an exhaustive look at the racial injustice that has built up over decades and led to OJ being found not guilty. The other was The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, who did the same and also pitched John Travolta as Robert Shapiro.
Travolta’s metamorphosis into one of OJ’s infamous lawyers was just one of the highlights of this American crime storythe first outing. The award-winning season also brought us gems like Sarah Paulson as Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark, Sterling K. Brown as Prosecutor Christopher Darden and Courtney B. Vance as the death row attorney Johnnie Cochran.
Oh, and OJ Simpson was played by Cuba Gooding Jr. in what was easily the most controversial role he’s had since Jerry Maguire. Welcome back, Cuba! The whole thing was poured wall to wall with big names, and it took us on a much more complex journey than we expected. We all remember the sound bites from the OJ trial, but American crime story provided a hypnotic context.
The deal with Versace
Pop culture didn’t take in the murder of Gianni Versace to the same degree as it did during the OJ Simpson trial, but the story surrounding Versace’s death was just as interesting as OJ’s fight against the justice system. To handle it, American crime story used Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the greatest botched manhunt in US history as the basis for its second season.
You probably recognize Versace’s name, but you may be less familiar with Cunanan’s. Andrew Cunanan was the spree killer responsible for the murder of the famous fashion designer. Played by Darren Criss in what Rotten Tomatoes calls ‘a career-defining achievement’, Cunanan is one of the focal points of The Murder of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Besides Gianni Versace, played by a cast-iron Edgar Ramirez, the two other key figures in the story are Versace’s sister Donatella and his longtime lover Antonio D’Amico. Again, American crime storyThe casting department released the A game, which brought Penelope Cruz to play Donatella and Ricky Martin D-Amico. It’s so much easier to watch murder mysteries when you have some familiar faces guiding you!
Getting jiggy with Clinton
We don’t know much about it American crime story season 3, and yet we also know enough. All you have to say is that it will tackle Bill Clinton’s impeachment, and most people’s minds will immediately fill in the blanks. If you were conscious in the 90s, you are familiar with the Monica Lewinski saga, even if you don’t know the details. Naughty White House guests – that’s it.
Of course, that’s how most people thought about OJ Simpson’s story, and then American crime story season 1 showed us how much we didn’t know. There’s a good chance the same will happen with Season 3 – currently titled Accusation – and we will be treated to an in-depth analysis of all the circumstances that led to Clinton receiving sexual favors in the Oval Office, being impeached, and remaining as president.
The cast once again meets the standards of the previous one American crime story seasons. For starters: Beanie Feldstein plays Monica Lewinsky, Clive Owen plays Clinton, Sarah Paulson plays Linda Tripp, Edie Falco plays Hillary Clinton, Billy Eichner plays Matt Grudge (brilliant!). . . and that only scratches the surface.
