Is the new ‘West Side Story’ movie a flop? What about his cast?

a new West Side Story movie comes out in December and we’re ready to see if it can handle the original adaptations. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this film is more of a translation of the 1950s musical than the 1960s film. Shooting was completed in 2019, but was delayed due to the coronavirus. But now it will finally be shown to the world.

This movie has a cast of newcomers, all-stars and many people in between. Let’s take a look at just two of his actors and see what this means for the upcoming movie.

Rachel Zegler: The Newcomer

Rachel Zegler, a New Jersey state actress, plays Maria Vasquez in this adaptation of West Side Story. She has quite an interesting history, so join us.

Zegler, born in 2001, grew up in several Catholic educational institutions. During her teens, she starred in many high school musicals and was even nominated for a Metro Award four years in a row!

Her big break came in early 2018 when Steven Spielberg held an open casting call for West Side Story. At the time, Zegler was only sixteen, but she still auditioned for the role and filmed two videos of her singing songs from the musical. Over thirty thousand others also tried for the part of Mary, but she managed to beat them all for the part!

Since then she has also been cast in the Shazam! continuation, Shazam! Anger of the Gods, and as the protagonist in Disney’s remake of Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs. She also produces videos for YouTube (makes song covers, original tunes and vlogs) and currently has over 200,000 subscribers!

It’s safe to say that the actress who plays Maria is doing quite well, and her journey really just started after she joined the West Side Story cast. But what about the film’s other lead role?

Ansel Elgort: The Seasoned Professional

Ansel Elgort, who has been cast as Tony in the new West Side Story, has a very different origin story. Unlike Zegler, who got her big break with this new Spielberg film, Elgort has been acting for a while. He got his start in 2013 career remake, in which he played Tommy Ross, then starred in the… Divergent film series, acting as the character Caleb Prior.

But his big break came a year later career, where he played Augustus Waters in the film version of John Green’s bestselling novel, The Fault in Our Stars. From there, his fame only grew (he was even in another John Green film adaptation, Paper cities) and he went on to star in Edgar Wright’s baby driver, as the titular character Baby (aka Miles).

After that, Elgort starred in a number of other movies (most notably the 2018 sci-fi drama Jonathan and 2019 The Goldfinch), and his last casting in West Side Story seems to be continuing that trend.

Will it flop or not?

Spielberg’s new film brings together two protagonists with very different claims to fame. Maybe this movie will be a flop, or maybe it won’t; it’s too early to say at this point. But whatever happens with this new production, at least for these two actors it has certainly been a success.

Are you going to see the new one West Side Story amendment? What do you think based on the trailer? Are you a fan of Rachel Zegler and/or Ansel Elgort, and what do you think of their work? Let us know in the comments!
