Fruits Basket is the reboot anime adaptation of the 2001 series, adapted from the manga of the same name by Natsuki Takaya. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the reboot series was first announced on November 19, 2018, after which the series premiered on April 6, 2019. Unlike the previous adaptation of the same, which ended just after Kyo removed his beads to show true form, the current adjustment continues. The 2019 adaptation tries to encapsulate the entire manga within three seasons. In addition, they can add the elements that were previously missing in the 2001 version.
A major reason the previous adaptation ended was because of disagreements between the director, Akitaro Daichi, and the mangaka, Natsuki Takaya. But now everything seems to be back on track as we have the last season, Fruits Basket Season 3, which premiered on April 5, 2021.
Fruit Basket Plot
Fruits Basket follows the life of a 16-year-old orphan named Honda Tohru. She had lost her mother in a car accident and had problems with a home ever since. As a makeshift place to stay, she had surprisingly used a tent on Sohma’s estate. As she meets the members of the Sohma family, her life takes a drastic turn. In the first episode itself, Tohru learns a big secret about the Sohmas. Some members of the family were cursed. And if they were embraced by a non-zodiac person of the opposite sex, they would turn into one of the Chinese Zodiacs. This would also happen if the zodiac member was under a lot of stress. Nevertheless, all 12 zodiac members, along with the cat, bowed to the mysterious family head, Akito.
Fruits Basket Season 2 Recap
Last time on Fruits Basket, Tohru Honda was adamant about breaking the Zodiacs’ curse. As an outsider, she could feel the pain and sorrow that the members felt. That’s why she takes it upon herself to find a way to help her friends. Only recently did her boyfriend Uo begin to develop feelings for a Sohma relative, Kureno. So during a school play where Uo expresses her feelings, the scene is recorded. So Tohru decides to show it to Kureno. Kureno receives and watches the recording only to realize he must reveal a big secret to her.
Kureno arranges a meeting with Tohru, where Kureno takes charge of the conversation. He reveals how he is also a zodiac member and was the rooster. This makes Honda wonder what role Akito then plays within the Zodiacs. To her horror, Kureno reveals that Akito is the God of the Zodiacs. Now it was clear why all zodiac members would bow to Akito. Kureno decides to give Tohru a hug. Here, too, Tohru is shocked, because when he was a member of the Zodiacs, Kureno did not turn into the rooster. This meant that Kureno had managed to heal himself of the curse. But unfortunately even he doesn’t know how he got it done.
But now he was no longer tied to Akito as before. Therefore, Kureno has no choice but to be physically with Akito against his will to be with Uo. And even now, when Kureno was free from the curse, he was burdened. He has missed the feeling of taking flight in the form of a rooster.
