Made for Love (2021-)

HBO Max

Black Mirror, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This satirical comedy depends on Cristin Milioti’s comedic talents. Hazel Green escapes a 10-year marriage – until she realizes that her husband, a tech billionaire, has placed a chip in her brain. He can see her every move and track her down to negotiate their marriage. Hazel seeks freedom with the help of her father, played by Ray Romano, who himself has an unorthodox relationship. A few twists and turns, a helpful dolphin, and socially awkward people also come along for this troubling ride.

The best TV show of 2021 may already be around. It’s a Sin follows a group of young gay men who lived in London in the 1980s, just when HIV / AIDS was first diagnosed. This unique take on the early stages of what became a death sentence is handled with creator Russell T Davies’ unstoppable zest for life. The warm, empathetic characters continue to live their lives to the fullest, flitting between bustling shared houses and local bars to the beat of a smashing ’80s soundtrack. Fast, stylish and dazzling, with an overpowering sense of hope, It’s a Sin is an overwhelming triumph for everyone to fall in love with.

This compulsive thriller starring Kaley Cuoco is one of HBO Max’s best new shows. Cuoco plays Cassie, a reckless flight attendant who sleeps with a passenger on a wild night out. She wakes up in Bangkok with barely any memory – and a corpse is in bed with her. As the ghost of the deceased helps her put things back together, she sobs and begins to assume the mystery of what happened. Watch out for a fantastic title sequence and a surprisingly dark psychological layer. But most of all, enjoy the funny combination of a clumsy detective who bumbles through the world of cold killers.

I Hate Suzie sees Billie Piper team up again with Secret Diary of a Call Girl writer Lucy Prebble. The result is a hectic tour de force of ideas, driven by a fragile performance by Piper. She plays the titular Suzie, an actress who, shortly after winning a role in a Disney film, discovers that she is one of the victims of a celebrity phone hacking scandal. Each episode explores a stage of trauma, addressing the question of how compromising leaks can both boost and perhaps liberate a person’s life. Amidst the relentless satire is a great friendship between Suzie and her manager Naomi (Leila Farzad).

From the minds of the gang behind Horrible Histories comes Ghosts, a sitcom that keeps getting better with every episode. Always reliable Charlotte Ritchie (Feel Good, Call The Midwife) stars as Alison, a woman who is renovating the old mansion she inherited with the help of her amateur builder husband. Money troubles aside, their renovation plans aren’t helped by the haunted residents who want the house to themselves. If you’re looking for purely light-hearted viewers, Ghosts delivers a high gag rate, a talented comedy ensemble, and even an endearing arc of friendship. Most of all, it is cheerfully silly.

This dark comedy takes us from London to Newcastle, Australia, after the accident of a woman who loses everything after her husband’s untimely death (don’t ask how he died). Broke and desperate, Sammy is forced to return to her hometown with her son and daughter, where she soon discovers she’s not exactly a popular resident. The cringe factor is strong as Sammy makes every effort to return to London, with some notable moments when she reunites with her bickering brother.

This comedy drama about a Syrian asylum seeker relies heavily on the warmer, cozier side of the equation. It follows the life of a British family after they return from a holiday in France to discover a passenger hiding in the back of their car. There’s endless charm in Sami’s fish-out-of-the-water hijinks as he adjusts to his new home. Home mines that feel good, filled with nice people who are willing to help a good man, even if it is a struggle for some family members.

Based on a memoir, Pure isn’t just another coming-of-age comedy about a young woman who recently moved to London. Marnie struggles with a form of OCD called Pure O, which causes her to have intrusive sexual thoughts, often at the worst of times. (Her own mother plays a part in one of these thoughts – no wonder Marnie is leaving the house.) What Pure does best is addressing stereotypes about OCD in compassionate ways: Marnie goes through the same stress as other twenty-somethings – a new job, her sexuality and friendship. An enlightening, recognizable and essential comedy.

Stath Lets Flats is one of the best new British TV shows dealing in quintessentially absurd British humor. Stath is a socially awkward Greek Cypriot rental agent whose father gives him a job working for his company. Despite his incapacity, Stath continues his new calling, showing flats to potential clients with a power outage or with an alarm because he can’t remember the code. His attempts to impress his dad have the same appeal as The Office, which was also interspersed in poignant moments to make sure you’re rooted for the characters. Stick around for the even better Season 2, which won three BAFTAs.

HBO Max

Search Party caught the attention of HBO Max and switched to production with the streamer in the third and fourth seasons. The latter is arguably the best yet, taking the story of four clueless millennials to even greater extremes, including a bizarrely brilliant Susan Sarandon cameo. But we start when Dory in her twenties becomes an amateur detective to track down a missing woman she barely knew in college. Really, she’s looking for something different: herself. Equally conceited are her boyfriend Drew, the scene-stealing Elliott, and the hilarious blonde Portia. This eccentric show somehow creates the perfect cocktail of dark humor, mystery and insane characters. A collector’s item that will not come often.

Her enigmatic story comes under the lens of a curious journalism student struggling with her own identity. Alternately hilarious, explicit, and heartbreaking, this must-watch biographical miniseries examines survival and the influence of mass media.

Raised by Wolves will please those who want to splurge a lot of of time (almost 10 hours) in a world brought to the screen with the help of Ridley Scott. Two androids, mother and father, attempt to establish an atheist human colony on a new planet after a war with a religious order destroys Earth. But they soon discover that controlling people’s beliefs is a daunting task. Directing the first two episodes, Scott pulls the strings as executive producer, setting up a provocative exploration of AI and religious beliefs. There is blood, big performances and a powerful lead in Amanda Collin’s “Mother.”

Romance

HBO Max

Love Life is an anthology series that focuses on another character’s love life until they meet the person they are meant to be with. The first chapter follows Anna Kendrick’s Darby, an aspiring art collector who dates a range of different men with complicated results. Love Life paints a refreshingly imperfect picture by traveling a long, messy road that ultimately offers a hopeful view of relationships.

Animation

Infinity Train (2019-2021)

HBO Max

Not a fan of cartoons? Let Infinity Train change your mind – all four seasons of the acclaimed show explore complex themes through character-driven storylines. Season 1 follows Tulip Olsen, a girl struggling with her parents’ recent divorce. Together with her friends – a confused robot and a talking corgi – she explores a seemingly endless train, whose passengers all have unresolved emotional problems or trauma. How do they get off the train? By solving their problems, of course. Dark, daring and magnificent, this is an animated viewing experience unlike anything you’ve seen. Definitely not just for children.

Crime

HBO Max

Entering its fifth and final season, this Italian crime drama is based on a true story and has established itself among the major mafia shows. It is notable for its realistic portrayal of Naples’ underworld, after a clan’s internal struggle for power after its head was arrested. With a dark, claustrophobic atmosphere and credible characters, Gomorrah is a refreshing and complete piece of TV.
