Who hasn’t heard of Dwayne Johnson? Known as The Rock of his professional wrestling era, Johnson has been an outspoken personality in action movies for years. Within the action genre, he played the rugged hero, the paternal figure, the charming and gentle protagonist.
He’s also done a lot of voice-over work, with the latest announcement being that he lent his voice for DC dog Krypto the Superdog in the upcoming Warner Bros. animated movie. DC League of Super-Pets. If you’re looking for an action solution for your next watch, pick from one of these Dwayne Johnson movies.
This 2017 action-comedy film brings some of the most visually appealing sights to the screen. Also featuring Zac Efron, Jon Bass, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and Priyanka Chopra, Baywatch falls into the category so bad is good.
Don’t look at it for the plot (it makes no sense) or the star cast (they’re literally just a star cast, nothing more), look at it for Johnson’s formidable biceps and sense of humor amid a sea of stale jokes and run-down clichés.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
A fantasy action movie starring Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and Bobby Cannavale Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is very watchable. We are aware of the Jumanji trap, that is, when you choose a character in the game to start playing, you get sucked into the actual site of the game.
Following the original Jumanji, this film follows four high school students who are sent to detention, who discover the video game system in the basement and – you guessed it – are sucked into the game. The funniest part? They are transformed into the funniest characters imaginable for them.
They pick up another teen who is stuck Jumanji on the road since 1996. How will the adventure change in 2017? It’s fun, hilarious and very, very funny.
Fast & Furious
Dwayne Johnson has been part of the Fast & Furious franchise as Agent Luke Hobbs for a long time, since the fifth film to be precise. We’re starting to think that a cocktail of action and comedy is Johnson’s jam. In fact, he and co-star Jason Statham recently headlined their own spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. He is reportedly not returning for the ninth film in the Fast franchise.
Here’s another example of a movie with a half-hearted script, made so much better with the presence of Johnson’s energy and charisma. Johnson plays Davis Okoye, a primatologist and former US Army Special Forces soldier who is friends with George, a gorilla. There’s more: the gorilla has been infected by a poisonous serum that gives it super strength and size. So now everyone is after him.
Think dark government officials trying to get George for their own underhand plans, shady companies … the usual thugs under such circumstances. Together with Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Johnson tries to save George from death or capture. We forgot to mention: he can communicate with the gorilla through sign language.
Starring Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi and Paul Giamatti, San Andreas is a disaster thriller. It’s a Johnson movie that you have to watch because of the thrilling action scenes and fun dynamic between the co-star.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
The last place you’d expect Dwayne Johnson to be is probably an entire Disney teen movie, but he likes to surprise. Even here he flexes his muscles. In Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Sean – played by Josh Hutcherson from Hunger games fame – receives a coded signal from an unknown island. His suspicion is that his grandfather – none other than Michael Caine – sent the message.
So he enlists the help of his stepfather Hank & embarks on this journey to a CGI-rich spectacle, where they are joined by the likes of Vanessa Hudgens & Luis Guzmán.
