The fate of Jefferson (played by Cress Williams) – as well as that of the Pierce family and the folks at Freeland – will be revealed when The CW’s comic book drama ends last Monday at 9 / 8c after four beloved seasons. .
Salim Akil, the EP and creator behind it Black lightning, says he had a bittersweet goodbye while working on the finale, in part because he still doesn’t know if the network will give the show’s potential Painkiller spin-off starring Jordan Calloway. But, he adds, he will know Monday – the day before The CW unveils its slate for 2021-22.
“It was fun filming,” Akil tells TVLine about the finale, which he directed and wrote the EP Charles Holland. “Black lightning has been such a blessing to me to be able to tell stories I want to tell and to allow others to tell stories they want to tell. ”
Without giving too much away, Akil teases a series finale that welcomes some characters and waves goodbye to others. It’s also a chance to restore Freeland’s justice by opening some sort of boxing ring for bad guys like Tobias (played by Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) to fight Black Lightning, if he’s still alive, or maybe even Painkiller.
Meanwhile, Chief Lopez (The best manMelissa De Sousa) has an account to settle with Lightning. But what lightning? Jennifer (played by China Anne McClain) or JJ (The Wonder YearsLaura Kariuki)? Fans will have to tune in to find out. “The whole process of the final with the people who were there was the best part,” Akil added.
Had it not been for a pandemic, Akil and the cast and crew would have celebrated their farewell to the show with a wrap party. But because they couldn’t, Christine Adams (who plays matriarch Lynn Pierce) organized a small gathering in Atlanta, where the show is taped. “She opened her house,” he says, adding that they had all taken COVID tests, “and invited us to a nice quiet party.”
And if Painkiller is picked up, maybe Akil will host the next happy gathering.
