Samms was born in London, England, to Madeleine U. (née White), a ballet dancer, and Michael EW Samuelson, who owned a film equipment rental company. Her grandfather, GB Samuelson, was a pioneer of British cinema. Samms grew up in the Jewish religion. She trained as a ballet dancer at the Royal Ballet School but stopped dancing at the age of 15 after a hip injury. After the accident, she trained as an actress and changed her name to “Emma Samms”.
