‘Elemental’ has strong Disney+ debut
According to The Walt Disney Company, “Elemental”’s initial five-day viewership was the strongest the service has seen for an animated film since “Turning Red” debuted in March 2022. Making the feat even more impressive for “Elemental” is the fact that “Turning Red” didn’t have a major theatrical release domestically – it was available exclusively on Disney+. “Elemental” even surpassed “Turning Red” numbers in Latin America, surpassing the 2022 film as the most-watched Disney+ movie premiere of all time in the region.
Disney+’s stellar launch completes what was a Cinderella commercial for “Elemental.” The film disappointed at the box office upon its release on June 16, becoming Pixar’s second-worst opening of all time with just under $30 million earned during its opening weekend. A promising drop of less than 40% in its second weekend indicated signs of life, but it didn’t look like “Elemental” would recoup its $200 million pre-marketing budget. It seemed like yet another blow in the deluge of box office disappointments for Disney this summer, with “The Little Mermaid,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Haunted Mansion” all disappointing compared to expectations.
However, “Elemental” showed staying power, remaining in the top five at the box office through its fifth weekend. The film performed incredibly well internationally, especially in South Korea, where it grossed over $50 million still topped the box office in its sixth weekend after release. The film has earned over $484 million worldwide, including $330 million internationally. according to BoxOffice Mojo. Pixar president Jim Morris told Variety in mid-August that, given all the revenue streams, “Elemental”certainly be a profitable film.“
“Elemental” takes place in a city where different elements, such as fire, land, water and air, are located and try to coexist. It stars Leah Lewis as the voice of Ember Lumen and Mamoudou Athie as the voice of Wade Ripple. It was directed by Peter Sohn, who previously directed ‘The Good Dinosaur’ for Pixar.
“Elemental” currently has a critic score of 74% and an audience score of 93% at Rotten Tomatoes; You can read our review of the film here.
The film has some representation at Disney Parks, with merchandise appearing at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts leading up to its release. An Ember Lumen fireplace was spotted last month in the renovated Pixel Pool at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel at Disneyland Resort.
