As is always the case in a preview for a Marvel project, the just released trailer for Loki tells a clear story – and also includes more obscure nuggets designed to empower those familiar with Marvel comic books. The new spot works beautifully for those unfamiliar with the source material: a fun jaunt through time and sci-fi bureaucracy with the most lovable rake in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Plus Owen Wilson? What’s not to love? But take a closer look, and the video also has a big tease about what’s to come.
Remember, the Loki Tom Hiddleston who plays on this show is not the one who traveled all the way through the MCU, healed his relationship with his brother, and switched to the light side. He has not yet become the Loki we saw Thor: The Dark World and Thor: RagnarokThis Loki seized the tesseract in the chaos of a time robbery Avengers: Endgame and hit from its own timeline around the end of the original Avengers movie. Mess with the timeline like that exactly which got Loki in trouble with the Time Variance Authority, aka the paperwork-heavy institution that Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius works for.

That (somewhat confusing) premise power explain this line from Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Judge Renslayer: “Do you really believe in this Loki variant?” But fans of the comic books know there is even more potential in that line.
There are one little Loki variants in the comic books including Lady Loki and Kid Loki. Rumor has it that both will also appear in this new show. In fact, one figure that appears in the trailer – someone many fans think is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow – is likely Lady Loki herself. Aren’t these Lokis a cute couple?
As for Kid Loki, it’s no secret that Marvel is sprinkling young superheroes on its Disney + shows and upcoming movies. (See: Wanda’s Fast-Growing Twins In WandaVision, Hailee Steinfeld in Hawkeye, Iman Vellani inside Mrs. Marvel, Dominique Thorne inside Iron heart, Xochitl Gomez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness… The list goes on and so on.) It is suspected that the studio is building towards a Young Avengers team; wouldn’t it be nice to add a young trickster god to that mix?
Loki will be streaming on Disney + starting June 11.
