How does Core Temp work in different processors?
Intel offers a certain T-junction temperature for the processor. This value is usually in the range between 85 degrees C and 105 degrees C. In the next generation of processors (starting with Nehalem), the exact T-junction value available for the software to read is contained in an MSR (Model Specific registry).
The temperature measurement data is contained in several MSR and the data is displayed as a Delta in 0C between the current temperature and the T-junction.
Now the actual temperature is calculated by: ‘Core temperature = T-Junction – Delta’.
ADM processors describe the temperature through a particular register in the northbridge of the CPU. Core Temp reads the value from the register and uses a processor formula (AMD) to calculate the current temperature.
In VIA processors, Core Temp is able to read the temperature of any core without any calculation or conversion. The thermal sensor in the processor gives an exact value for the temperature in Celsius.
How accurate is the core temperature?
As mentioned above, the core temperature gets the reading directly from the DTS (Digital Thermal Sensor) built into the processor, getting an error is almost impossible.
But there are always some exceptional cases, so it is not correct to say that this program always gives 100 percent accurate readings.
