Comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiyaa’s arrest by the Narcotics Control Bureau in connection with possession and consumption of cannabis has led to shocking reactions throughout the showbiz world.
Bharti & Harsh Arrested By NCB Team
- A case has been registered against the accused under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he added.
- Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s home in Mumbai was searched on Saturday by the anti-drugs bureau.
- Officials said a “small quantity of cannabis” (86.5 grams) was found from their home in an apartment complex in Andheri. They were then taken to the agency’s Mumbai office for questioning.
- According to the NCB, during questioning, Ms. Bharti and Mr. Limbachiyaa accepted that they use narcotic substances.
The agency acted against the duo after arresting a 21-year-old drug peddler in Khar Danda early on Saturday morning and seizing 40 grams of ganja, 15 LSD dots, and Nitrazepam tablets, a controlled medication used to treat insomnia and anxiety, from his possession.
Acting on a tip-off, the NCB on Saturday conducted a search at Singh’s office and residence as part of its probe into the alleged drug use in the entertainment industry, and seized 86.5 gm of cannabis during the search, an official from the probing agency earlier said.
Punishment for this offense:
The quantity of drugs found at the couple’s home was not commercial but could still invite up to 10 years in jail, according to officials.
Up to 1,000 gm of ganja is considered a small quantity, which attracts a jail term of up to six months and/or a fine of Rs 10,000. Possession of commercial quantity — 20 kg or more — can attract up to 20 years in jail. For the quantity in between, the punishment can be as much as 10 years in jail.
Before that, the NCB had summoned film producer Firoz Nadiadwala. A day earlier his wife, Shabana Saeed, was arrested after investigators allegedly found 10 grams of marijuana at their Juhu home during a raid. Ms. Saeed has since been released on bail.
Bharti Singh has appeared in many comedy and reality shows on TV. She has also hosted a few such shows.
The NCB has been probing the alleged drug use in Bollywood after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June on the basis of WhatsApp chats involving drugs.
