VANCOUVER – A rise in scam calls in BC has prompted a warning from the local Better Business Bureau.
The BBB says it has received dozens of reports of scam calls where the caller claims to be an Amazon employee and asks for personal and Amazon account information.
During the calls, the recipient hears a recorded message or a person on the line posing as someone from Amazon and says there is a problem with the account. Sometimes that person claims there is a fraudulent charge, a lost package, or an order that has not been fulfilled.

In some cases, consumers have reported being asked directly for their credit card and account credentials. In other cases, they have asked for remote access to their computer.
“There has been a worrying increase in reports of these scams,” said Karla Laird, BBB community and public relations manager serving mainland BC.
“We tracked 28 calls in December, 93 in January, and 41 calls this week alone. The scammers are also spoofing the phone numbers of other organizations to cover up their calls and lend them credibility.
“Some of these numbers have been linked back to Canadian small businesses and even BBB offices in the United States.”
The BBB says anyone who receives an unsolicited call asking for personal information should ignore it. Amazon will never call customers without warning asking for sensitive information, such as a social security number or credit card information.
Amazon will also not ask customers to make payments outside of their website or for remote access to a device.
Anyone receiving a scam call should report it to BBB’s scam tracker and Amazon customer service.
