Baahubali star Prabhas announces new movie for pan-India release

NEW DELHI: Baahubali star Prabhas has announced his new movie, a love story entitled Radhe Shyam, set to hit theaters on July 30, 2021. The film stars Pooja Hedge and is directed by Radha Krishna Kumar.

The announcement of the film, which was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi to lure pan-Indian audiences, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 lockdown that wreaked havoc on the cinema company, coincided with the Valentine’s Day celebrations to highlight the theme of the film.

Prabhas gained recognition across the country with the Baahubali franchise, the second installment of which has grossed nearly Rs 2000 crore worldwide and remains the highest grossing Indian film ever. The actor, who mainly works in Telugu cinema, was last seen in the action thriller Saaho, which appeared in Hindi and Tamil in addition to Telugu and fetched nearly Rs 500 crore worldwide.

Filmmakers in the South Indian film industry, increasingly keeping an eye on pan-Indian audiences, have taken the lead in announcing films for theatrical release following the Covid-19 lockdown. Last week, Karan Johar Liger’s Dharma Productions announced the Hindi debut of Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda, best known for the controversial romantic drama Arjun Reddy, set to release September 9.

Filmmakers list a series of exciting films that originate from South Indian languages but are intended to be dubbed or recorded in multiple languages, including Hindi. These have a mix of Bollywood and South Indian faces and aim to attract fans in a variety of states and regions. Baahubali director SS Rajamouli has Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt alongside Jr NTR and Ram Charan in his upcoming film RRR, while Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan will star with Prabhas in a film funded by Telugu’s production house Vyjayanthi Movies. Prabhas also has a movie entitled Adipurush with Saif Ali Khan as the antagonist directed by Om Raut from Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. The second installment in the KGF franchise features Sanjay Dutt along with Kannada star Yash.

Subject matter experts say that bringing together stars in multiple languages will only increase the market for an individual movie, making it more viable and increasing sources of income such as satellite, digital, music and trade rights. The credit of crossing geographic barriers with investing in big budgets, action and high-octane graphics to make movies that the whole country can watch together goes to the Baahubali franchise, film industry analysts believe.
