Watch a Clip From Errol Morris' Upcoming Doc on Timothy Leary

Timothy Leary’s long-time partner Joanna Harcourt-Smith recalls one of her first trips with the acid advocate in the first look at Errol Morris’ upcoming documentary on Leary, set to premiere on Showtime later this year.

The as-yet-untitled film was inspired by Harcourt-Smith’s memoir, Tripping the Bardo With Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story, and centers around the question of why Leary turned away from psychedelics in the Seventies and began to work with federal agents.

Per a statement: “Was [Leary’s] ‘perfect love’ Joanna Harcourt-Smith a government pawn, as suggested by Allen Ginsberg? Or was she simply a rich, beautiful, young woman out for the adventure of a lifetime? Morris and Harcourt-Smith will reexamine this chaotic period of her life and explore the mystery of the Leary saga: his period of exile, reimprisonment and subsequent cooperation with the authorities. Devotion or selfishness? Perfect love or outright betrayal? Destiny or manipulation?”

In the new clip from the documentary, Harcourt-Smith fondly remembers receiving an invitation to Leary’s home and being rather awed by the canary yellow Porsche in his driveway. “This man is hip,” Harcourt-Smith says with a laugh, “maybe hip enough for me!”

While there were other people with them, Harcourt-Smith remembers having only enough acid for herself and Leary, and she goes on to share what seems to be a particularly vivid memory from their trip together: “He said to me, ‘You’ve come to free me.’ I thought, ‘Ok.’ I didn’t really understand what he meant. But I knew we were bonded, truly bonded from that moment.”

In a statement, Morris called the upcoming film a “dream project,” adding, “I’m always looking for alternative ways into a story. You never want to go through the front door. Or even the back door. Much better to find an attic window that has been left ajar. Joanna Harcourt-Smith, who had a love affair with Timothy Leary, wrote a book detailing how they met, how they fell in love, how they took drugs together, how he ended up in prison. And then something surprising happened. I found Joanna as interesting as Timothy Leary, perhaps even more so. It was a way to tell a story about the Seventies in a powerful and unexpected way.”

The Passion of the Christ 2 Talks Are Happening Confirms Screenwriter [Exclusive]

It’s been a little bit since we’ve heard anything official regarding The Passion of the Christ 2, which Mel Gibson has been planning since June 2016. Now, we have an update from screenwriter Randall Wallace, who reveals that he and Gibson have discussed the project quite a bit. But, for now at least, they are playing things pretty close to the chest.

I recently had the chance to speak with Randall Wallace in honor of the upcoming 25th anniversary Braveheart Blu-ray steelbook release. During the conversation, I asked Wallace about the status of the sequel, which Mel Gibson has said will be titled The Resurrection, given that it will follow Jesus’ resurrection following his crucifixion. As it turns out, this is something Wallace knows a great deal about. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“It’s something we talk about a lot. My major in college was religion, and I did a year seminary afterward. My major focus of study was the resurrection. That is the Mount Everest of movies and we are in discussions about it a lot. It’s a highly-charged one, so we keep our cards close to our chest.”

The last we heard about the project from Mel Gibson, who directed the original, was in 2016 while he was promoting Hacksaw Ridge, which represented his return to directing after a decade. Gibson had been out of the limelight ever since a very public DUI arrest and now-infamous anti-semitic rant. The filmmaker has been trying to make something of a comeback, popping up in movies over the last few years such as Daddy’s Home 2 and Dragged Across Concrete. Gibson is also attached to direct a remake of The Wild Bunch.

Setting aside any personal feelings one might have about Mel Gibson or the idea of this proposed sequel in general, there are obvious business reasons for doing this movie. The Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, grossed a staggering $611 million at the global box office, working from a budget of just $30 million. Until Deadpool was released in 2016, that made it the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. So, financially speaking, it’s easy to see why a studio would get on board with the idea. On the other side, there is indeed a story to be told and it’s something both Gibson and Randall Wallace are quite interested in exploring.

Officially speaking, there is no word on when this could happen. It seems likely that Mel Gibson will first direct The Wild Bunch, which has been coming together behind the scenes. Jim Caviezel is expected to return as Jesus. Beyond that, no other casting has been hinted at. Caviezel said in 2018 that he expects it to be the “biggest film ever.” We’ll be sure to keep you posted as any further details are made available. In the meantime, the Braveheart 25th anniversary Blu-ray is set to arrive on June 16 from Paramount Pictures.

Summerland Trailer Catches Gemma Arterton in a Magical WWII Love Story

Summerland Trailer Catches Gemma Arterton in a Magical WWII Love Story

IFC Films has released a new trailer for Summerland. The movie was written and directed by Jessica Swale, the Olivier Award-winning playwright behind Nell Gwynn. This represents Swale’s feature debut. Described as an “intensely emotional story of love’s endurance in trying times,” this drama may end up being one of the first new movies to arrive in theaters when they open back up in July.

The trailer opens up with a writer struggling to get her story on the page. She then unwittingly is forced to care for a young boy. Despite her initial reluctance, the two end up bonding and he serves as an inspiration. Things get rather emotional as they get to know one another, for various reasons. It looks to be a heartwarming and heartbreaking drama that hinges on an unlikely relationship. Though it does feel that the trailer lays out all of the beats pretty succinctly, leaving little up to the imagination. Be that as it may, it appears that this could be an emotionally effective cinematic endeavor.

The cast includes Gemma Arterton (Byzantium, Quantum of Solace), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Motherless Brooklyn, Beyond The Lights), Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Tom Courtenay (The Aeronauts, Doctor Zhivago). Guy Heeley and Adrian Sturges serve as producers. Jessica Swale, in a statement, had this to say about her directorial debut.

“I’m delighted to be working with IFC to bring Summerland to the US. ‘Summerland’ is about hope, imagination and the possible existence of magic. It is about finding light after darkness, and, as such, has never felt more timely. I can’t wait to share this story, in which Gemma gives a performance unlike anything we have seen her do before, as a woman who learns to embrace life, against all odds, in all its complexity and diversity.”

Summerland centers on Alice, a reclusive writer who is resigned to a solitary life on the seaside cliffs of Southern England. All the while, World War II is raging forth on the other side of the channel. One day she opens her front door to discover she must adopt a young London evacuee named Frank. Despite being resistant at first, before long, the two realize they have more in common in their pasts than Alice had assumed.

Most movies have been pushed to much later in 2020, if not well into 2021, with theaters being shut down since mid-March. Warner Bros.’ Tenet is still dated for July 17, but it is highly possible the release will be pushed. Summerland is set to arrive on VOD and in theaters on July 31 from IFC Films. Should the theatrical release stick, it will be one of a small number of new titles that will help give movie theaters something to showcase when they do open their doors again. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
