ABCD – American Born Confused Desi starring Allu Sirish and Rukshar Dhillon in prominent roles has generated a lot of buzz thanks to Sid Sriram’s smash hit ‘Mella Mellaga’.
Did the film live up to expectations?
Aravind (Allu Sirish) was born and raised in America and does not know the value of money. His father (Naga Babu) sends him to India so that he would learn the true value of life and money.
Together with his friend Baasha (Bharath), he starts living on a monthly allowance of Rs 5000 in a Hyderabad slum. He soon becomes famous and youth icon in Hyderabad.
What happens next is the story.
Performances by artists:
Allu Sirish has a rich kid look and suits the character, but he lacks performance skills to fill this role.
Bharath has played his side kick. His comedy, however, does not bring laughter.
Rukshar Dhillon has a nice appearance, but her character doesn’t have much to do.
Naga Babu as NRI father is good. Raja as a politician is okay, but his role is unnecessary distraction.
The one that really makes us laugh is Vennela Kishore as a TV news anchor.
The film has a catchy song “Mella Mellaga”, sung by Sid Sreeram, which already has millions of views on YouTube. This is the only song that is the best of this movie. The rest of the music is so below par.
Editing is patchy. Artwork is decent. Cinematography is okay.
Mella Melaga song
No emotional connection
We have recently seen or heard many news articles about rich businessmen who send their sons to remote places to understand the life of the common man and make them understand how difficult it is to make money.
“ABCD” addresses the same point, although it is an official remake of Dulquer Salmaan’s comedy film “ABCD” the comedy film “ABCD” (2013).
The plot point has enough material to weave an interesting drama out of it. However, this Telugu remake has failed on many fronts from the start itself.
The scenes made for entertainment are terribly cliché. The sequences written to evoke sentiment are quite predictable. And the narration is flat from beginning to end.
One of the reasons the movie has created buzz is the song of “Mella Mellaga”. Unfortunately this is placed at a time (second half) when the public is starting to lose interest in the developments.
Movies with minor twists and wafer-thin storylines only work if the romantic scenes on the main couple look fresh and comedic sequences even have a great laugh. “ABCD” lacks both qualities.
Casting Allu Sirish for this role itself is a bad decision. This character needs someone with comic timing, who can enliven everyday scenes with his energy. Although Sirish has the appearance of rich children, he is unable to get into the role. His passive acting has further compounded the routine.
Some time ago, a video clip by I News anchor Krishna Mohan went viral. Vennela Kishore’s character is designed on Krishna Mohan which is quite funny.
While the first half of the film focuses on the rich lifestyle of Allu Sirish and Bharath, the second half focuses on how he understands the meaning of life, but too many necessary scenes are created. Ex: The whole thread of young politician played by Raja is an anomaly.
This is another case of a good plot point being wasted by uneven narration.
Bottom line: confused design
