History
The Golden Gate Hotel was built in 1906 by John Milburn and Charles N. Topsy. The hotel was originally called the Hotel Nevada. In 1907, the hotel was renamed the Golden Gate Hotel after the Golden Gate Bridge, which was under construction at the time.
In 1931, the Golden Gate Hotel was purchased by Benny Binion. Binion added a casino to the hotel and renamed it the Binion’s Horseshoe. The casino was one of the first casinos in Las Vegas to offer table games such as blackjack and roulette.
In 1979, the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino was purchased by Steve Wynn. Wynn renovated the hotel and casino and renamed it the Golden Nugget. The Golden Nugget became one of the most popular casinos in Las Vegas.
In 2004, the Golden Nugget was purchased by MGM Resorts International. MGM Resorts continued to operate the casino under the Golden Nugget name.
In 2017, the Golden Nugget was purchased by Golden Entertainment, Inc. Golden Entertainment renamed the casino the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.
