Who Was the Killer in the End?

People often try to find the explanation for Basic Instinct’s Ending. Basic Instinct, if you could remember, you’d call it one of the most gripping movies of the 90’s. A story so intricate with a well-played character leading it, it keeps the audience hooked. Paul Verhoeven directed the film with Joe Eszterhas on the writing team. Basic Instinct stars Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Today we look at the ending of Basic Instinct, a film that has gained recognition for its groundbreaking depictions of sexuality in mainstream Hollywood cinema.

So Basic Instinct followed the story of two detectives working on the murder of a rock star who was killed by an ice pick. The only thing that complicated the investigation was the prime suspect – a beautiful blonde who is also an intelligent crime novelist. The stories surrounding the suspect kept going up and down. Those who got closer only found themselves locked further into the case, to a point where the kill was difficult. Did they? Let’s break down Basic Instinct’s plot and ending.

Summary of the basic instinct plot

Basic Instinct follows Detective Nick Curran as he investigates the murder of Rockstar Johnny Boz. A mysterious blonde woman has killed him with an ice pick, and Nick Curran and his partner Gus Moran are out to get it. The investigation leads them to Boz’s alleged girlfriend, Catherine Tramell. A double psychology and crime novelist who claims there was nothing serious between them. Catherine’s novel that similarly tells about the murder of a singer, is why she is the prime suspect.

In the midst of all this, Nick Curran was also working on himself. In the past, he had killed two tourists due to drug and alcohol addiction. So dr. Beth Gardner had helped him with the addiction. They also had an on-again, off-again relationship. Anyway, coming back to the case, talking to Catherine doesn’t reveal much. For every question, Catherine has her own answer. However, the police do not yet have strong evidence. Another murder of her professor from Catherine’s college days comes back to her. Especially with the fact that a similar ice pick killed the professor.

From Basic Instinct (1992), with Michael Douglas as Detective Nick Curran and George Dzundza as Detective Gus Moran

Nick Curran kept an eye on Catherine. With this, they got closer as Nick discovered Catherine’s interest in him because of her next novel, in which a detective character is inspired by him. He also learns about Catherine’s girlfriend Roxy and that Catherine has received files about him from Beth. The next day, he confronts Beth, but she says she gave it to Lieutenant Marty Nielsen. A similar confrontation takes place before everyone pulls them apart.

Later in the evening, Nick and Beth get into a huge fight. A phone call later informs Nick of Nielson’s death. Now the tables were turned for Nick, but it was Beth who saved him by saying he was home last night. Though Nick is called off the case, he continues to meet Catherine, and soon a mysterious killer attempts to attack him via a car. He follows the same car and sees it crash, and the driver is none other than Roxy.
