History of Century Downs Racetrack and Casino
Century Downs Racetrack and Casino was originally built as a horse racing track in 1983. The track was owned by the Alberta Jockey Club and operated by Magna Entertainment Corporation. In 1993, the casino was added to the property and Century Downs became a full-fledged gaming and entertainment destination.
In 2009, the Alberta Jockey Club filed for bankruptcy and Century Downs was sold to the Edmonton Northlands Corporation. Northlands continued to operate the track and casino until 2017, when it was sold to the Edmonton Casinos Corporation.
The Edmonton Casinos Corporation has invested heavily in Century Downs in recent years. The track has been renovated and the casino has been expanded. Century Downs is now one of the most popular casinos in Alberta and is a major economic driver for the city of Edmonton.
